Thailand tightened cannabis rules after a brief period of open retail. As a visitor, assume strict regulation: what you see in old blog posts or social media may no longer be legal.
Medical use and PT33
To legally obtain cannabis with THC above 0.2%, you need a prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner and the official PT33 form. Purchases must be from authorised dispensaries that verify your prescription. Tourists cannot simply walk into a shop and buy high-THC flower as a souvenir.
CBD and low-THC products
Products with 0.2% THC or less may be sold under separate rules (e.g. certain cosmetics, food, or hemp-derived items). Labels and enforcement vary—if unsure, do not buy. Avoid ambiguous edibles or drinks marketed to tourists.
Public use and smoking
Smoking cannabis in public—streets, beaches, parks, and many hotel areas—is prohibited and can result in fines. Respect no-smoking zones the same way you would for tobacco. Never use cannabis near schools, temples, or family areas.
No export
Taking cannabis or cannabis products out of Thailand—even small amounts or CBD items—is illegal and can lead to criminal charges at departure. Do not purchase anything you plan to fly home with.
FAQ
Can tourists still visit cannabis shops?
Some shops remain open but sell only within the current legal framework. High-THC products require a Thai medical prescription—not a foreign one.
What about cannabis from before the rule change?
Old stock and unclear products are risky. When in doubt, do not buy or consume.
What if I need medical cannabis for a condition?
Consult a licensed Thai doctor or hospital before travel. Carry documentation, but expect local prescription requirements to apply.
