First impressions matter — and Thailand’s main airports can feel busy after a long flight. As locals who meet friends at these terminals every week, we put together this practical guide so you know what to expect from immigration through to your hotel.
Before you land: complete TDAC within 72 hours, check your visa or exemption, and skim our checklist.
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) — Bangkok
Thailand’s main international hub, east of central Bangkok. Most long-haul flights arrive here.
Immigration
- Have passport, TDAC QR code, onward ticket, and hotel address ready.
- Queues peak 18:00–23:00; e-gates exist for eligible passport holders — follow airport signage.
- TDAC kiosks are in the arrivals hall if you forgot to submit online — see our TDAC guide.
SIM card
All three major operators (AIS, True, NT/dtac) have counters after baggage claim and in the arrivals hall. Tourist SIMs and eSIM QR codes from ฿299–899 for 7–15 days. More: SIM card guide.
Transport to the city
- Airport Rail Link (ARL): Non-stop Express to Makkasan (฿150, ~15 min) or City Line to Phaya Thai (฿45, ~30 min) — connects to BTS Skytrain. Best value in rush hour; runs ~06:00–24:00.
- Official taxi: Follow signs to the public taxi queue (not touts). Take a queue ticket; ฿50 airport surcharge + meter (flag fall ~฿35). Expect ฿300–450 to Sukhumvit/Silom off-peak; +฿70–120 for tolls on expressways.
- Grab / Bolt: Pick-up at designated ride-hail zones (Level 1 or 2 — check app). Often similar price to meter taxi; fixed quote, no haggling.
- Airport bus: Cheapest option to selected areas (฿35–60); slower but good for Khao San if you travel light.
- Private transfer / hotel limo: Pre-book if arriving late or with family.
Avoid: Anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering “cheap taxi” — use the official queue or app.
Don Mueang Airport (DMK) — Bangkok
North of Bangkok; hub for AirAsia, Nok Air, and many domestic and regional flights.
Immigration
- Terminal 1 (international) and Terminal 2 (domestic) — confirm your terminal before booking connections.
- Same TDAC and visa rules as BKK; kiosks available in international arrivals.
SIM card
Operator booths in arrivals; slightly fewer options than BKK but adequate for tourist packs.
Transport to the city
- Official taxi: Public queue at Terminal 1 international arrivals — meter + ฿50 surcharge. ~฿250–400 to central Bangkok depending on traffic and tolls.
- Grab / Bolt: Designated pick-up points outside each terminal.
- Airport shuttle bus A1 / A2: To BTS Mo Chit or MRT Chatuchak (~฿30–50).
- No direct rail link from DMK — taxi, bus, or Grab are the practical options.
Connecting BKK ↔ DMK: allow 1–2 hours; free shuttle exists but taxi/Grab is more reliable with luggage.
Phuket International Airport (HKT)
Gateway to Phuket island and Andaman beaches. Single terminal for international and domestic.
Immigration
- Can be slow in high season (Nov–Apr); have TDAC and hotel booking ready.
- TDAC kiosks in arrivals if needed.
SIM card
All major operators in the hall after customs; island coverage is generally good on AIS and True.
Transport
- Airport bus (Smart Bus): To Rawai via Patong/Kata — cheap but infrequent; check latest timetable.
- Official taxi: Fixed-fare counters in arrivals (by zone) — pay at desk, take receipt to taxi. Safer than street touts.
- Grab: Available; pick-up zone signed outside.
- Minivan / shared transfer: Pre-book for Krabi or Khao Lak connections.
Patong ~45–60 min; Phuket Town ~30 min depending on traffic.
Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX)
Compact airport close to the Old City — one of the easiest arrivals in Thailand.
Immigration
- Usually faster than Bangkok; TDAC QR ready.
- Kiosks available for last-minute TDAC submission.
SIM card
Small operator counters in arrivals; or buy in Old City / Nimman later — coverage is strong city-wide.
Transport
- Official taxi: Counter inside terminal — fixed zones or meter to Old City ~฿150–200 (5–15 min).
- Grab: Works well; short rides to most hotels.
- Red songthaew (shared pickup): Budget option if you know your route and can negotiate — locals use these; tourists may prefer taxi on first night.
- Hotel pickup: Many guesthouses offer free or low-cost pickup if pre-arranged.
Tips for every airport
- Withdraw baht at airport ATMs (฿220 typical foreign fee) or exchange a small amount — see money guide.
- Keep valuables in carry-on; use official baggage services only.
- Customs: declare cash over USD 20,000 and restricted goods — customs guide.
- Book first-night hotel with address in English and Thai for immigration forms.
