Souvenirs

Thailand is a shopper’s paradise—from night markets to mall boutiques. Bring home something meaningful, but know what you can legally export and what fits in your luggage. When in doubt, skip wildlife products, counterfeit goods, and anything that might fail customs at home.

Popular souvenirs

  • Food & snacks: Dried mango, Thai tea mix, instant tom yum, chilli paste, coconut chips.
  • Textiles: Thai silk scarves, sarongs, hill-tribe bags (Chiang Mai and Chatuchak).
  • Spa & beauty: Herbal balms, coconut oil, lemongrass products, Snail White-style local brands.
  • Handicrafts: Celadon pottery (Chiang Mai), lacquerware, wooden elephants, soap carvings.
  • Clothing: Linen shirts, beach wear, custom-tailored pieces (allow fitting time in Bangkok).
  • Art: Prints, Buddha images (see customs—large religious items may need care).

Where to shop

  • Bangkok: Chatuchak Weekend Market, ICONSIAM, MBK, Asiatique, pharmacy chains for beauty gifts.
  • Chiang Mai: Night Bazaar, Sunday Walking Street, Nimman boutiques, Bo Sang umbrella village.
  • Phuket & islands: Night markets, Jungceylon, local pearl and cashew vendors (compare quality).
  • Airport duty-free: Last-minute snacks and spirits (within liquid carry-on limits).

Bargain politely at markets; fixed prices at malls. Beware gem and “special discount” tours—see Scams to avoid.

Customs and export rules

  • No ivory, protected wildlife, or corals—severe penalties.
  • Buddha images / religious antiques: Large or antique pieces may require export permits from the Fine Arts Department.
  • Cannabis products: Do not export—illegal. See Cannabis laws.
  • Counterfeit brands: Seized at many destination countries.
  • Food: Check your home country’s import rules for meat, fresh fruit, and plant products.

Keep receipts for expensive items; declare on arrival at home if required.

Shipping and postage

Oversized or heavy items can go by Thailand Post, EMS, or couriers (DHL, FedEx). Shops in tourist areas often offer “send to hotel” or international shipping. Compare EMS vs courier for speed and tracking.

FAQ

Are Thai silk products real silk?
Quality varies—buy from reputable shops; burn-test stalls are tourist gimmicks. Jim Thompson and certified shops are safer bets.

Can I take Thai curry paste home?
Sealed shelf-stable packs usually fine in checked luggage; verify your country’s food import rules.

Should I buy gems in Thailand?
Only from established dealers with certificates—not from tuk-tuk tour shops.
