Traveling in Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island—distances between beaches are longer than they look on a map. Patong, Kata, Karon, Old Phuket Town, and the airport each feel like separate hubs. Plan transport ahead, especially at night or during rain season.

Grab and ride apps

Grab (car and bike) is the most reliable option for fixed fares across the island. Works well from Phuket International Airport (HKT) to major beaches—often cheaper and clearer than airport taxis. Bolt also operates in parts of Phuket.

Metered taxis

Official yellow-red meter taxis exist but can be hard to find outside the airport and Phuket Town. At the airport, use the official taxi counter for metered or fixed-rate tickets. Elsewhere, insist on the meter (“meter, please”) or agree a price before leaving—beach-area taxis often quote flat rates (300–800+ THB depending on distance).

Tuk-tuks

Patong and beach towns have plenty of tuk-tuks, but fares are not metered and are usually higher than Grab for the same trip. Fine for short hops if you agree the price first. Avoid “special tour” offers—see Scams to avoid.

Ferry ports and island hops

  • Rassada Pier (Phuket Town): Ferries and speedboats to Phi Phi, Lanta, and other Andaman destinations.
  • Chalong Pier: Diving trips, private charters, some island tours.
  • Book ahead in high season (Nov–Apr); seas can be rough May–Oct—check weather and operator safety record.

Allow extra travel time from Patong or Kata to piers—30–60 minutes by road is common.

Scooter rental—use caution

Scooters are popular but Phuket has a high accident rate among tourists. Hills, sand on roads, and heavy traffic in Patong increase risk. You need a valid motorcycle licence; police checkpoints are frequent. Always wear a helmet. Inspect the bike and photograph existing damage before riding.
